Amnesty International - USA: 2025 Write 4 Rights (9 Cases)

1- MADAGASCAR: DAMISOA

In 2021, Damisoa and his family fled drought-stricken Androy due to drought-induced famines. In Boeny, the government resettled them at a site where farming is unviable and access to food, water and sanitation is regularly and severely hindered by fast-moving, crocodile-infested waters.People displaced by famine and now living in Boeny, including Damisoa and his fellow residents, urgently need humanitarian assistance. But aid is currently almost exclusively concentrated in drought-stricken southern Madagascar.

Honorable Director General

We call on you to take urgent steps to guarantee the human rights of people displaced and now living in Boeny and across Madagascar. We urge you to actively seek the support of humanitarian agencies and other relevant actors to do this. Thank you.

 2-NORWAY: ELLINOR GUTTORM UTSI

Ellinor Guttorm Utsi is a Sámi Indigenous leader working tirelessly to protect her community’s ancient reindeer-herding way of life in northern Norway. In 2023, several hundred wind turbines were suddenly proposed directly on their summer grazing lands in Čorgaš, threatening to damage grazing land, break migration routes and destroy their culture. Despite fierce opposition, the authorities are rushing approvals.

Honorable Prime Minister of Norway:

We call on you to protect the rights of the Sami reindeer-herding communities by ensuring that industrial wind-power projects that threaten their lands and way of life do not proceed without the free, prior and informed consent of the affected Sami people. Thank you.

 3-SOUTH AFRICA: UNECEBO MBOTENI

In April 2024, three-year old Unecebo Mboteni died after falling into a pit toilet at his pre-school in the Eastern Cape.More than one year on and the family has had no word from the Little Champions Day Care Center on the department about weather the pit toilet that Unecebo fell into has been removed. They were also told that it could be years before the investigation is completed.

Honorable Minister of Basic Education:

We call on you to ensure the investigation into Unecebo’s death is expedited and the outcome made public, and that those responsible are held accountable. Thank you.

 4- CAMBODIA: MOTHER NATURE CAMBODIA

Mother Nature Cambodia has courageously defended the Cambodian environment since 2013. But since 2016, the authorities have repeatedly targeted the group with arrests and prosecution, for nothing more than protecting the environment and exercising their right to freedom of expression. In June 2024, six members of the group were sentenced to between six and eight years in prison. One member fled Cambodia to continue their work, but the remaining five activists are enduring harsh conditions in prisons that are not compliant with international human rights standards

Honorable Prime Minister of Cambodia:

We call on you to immediately and unconditionally release the five detained activists and quash all conviction against Mother Nature Cambodia activists. Nobody should face prison simply for protecting the planet. Thank you.

5- HONDURAS: JUAN LOPEZ

Juan López was a loving father and husband who tirelessly defended his local environment in northern Honduras from mining and energy projects which have threatened local rivers, forests and the Carlos Escaleras Mejía National Park. On 14 September 2024, he was shot dead in his car by a masked gunman as he left church.

Honorable Attorney General

We call on you to ensure a prompt, independent and impartial investigation into the killing of Juan Lopez. All those suspected of being responsible for the crime must be brought to justice in fair trials, including those who ordered the murder. Thank you.

6- TUNISIA: SONIA DAHMANI

Sonia Dahmani is a lawyer and media commentator who has dedicated her life to defending human rights. On 11 May 2024, security forces arrested Sonia. She has been convicted and sentenced on unfounded charges of “spreading false news”, with additional politically motivated investigations still pending. She is being held in inhumane conditions and denied conditions and denied.

Honorable President of Tunisia

We call on you to immediately and unconditionally release Sonia Dahmani, quash the sentences and drop all charges against her as she is detained Soley for exercising her right to freedom of expression. Thank you.

 7-MYANMAR: SAI ZAW THAIKE

Sai Zaw has been persecuted for his work reporting on the devastation caused by Cyclone Mocha. In 2023, he was arrested and sentenced by a military tribunal to 20 years in prison. He has endured beatings by prison staff and periods of solitary confinement.

The Myanmar Military Junta:

We call on you to immediately and unconditionally release Sai Zaw. Thank you.

8- ECUADOR: The Guerreras por la Amazonía

The Guerreras por la Amazonía are fighting alongside the Union of People Affected by Texaco’s Oil Operations and the collective “Eliminen los Mecheros, Enciendan la Vida” (Remove the Flares, Ignite Life) to eliminate gas flares which are causing toxic fumes and environmental devastation in their communities. In 2021, a landmark ruling required the government to eliminate the use of gas flares, yet they continue to burn.

Honorable President of Ecuador:

We are deeply concerned that the young defenders are facing stigma and violent intimidation. Rather than investigating the threats against them, the authorities told the group that they will only provide them with protection if they stop their activism. We demand that you uphold the ruling to eliminate gas flares and ensure the safety of climate defenders Thank you.

 9-USA: LEQAA KORDIA

Leqaa Kordia is a 32-year-old Muslim Palestinian woman living in the United States. She has been detained by U.S. immigration authorities since March 13. Since 2023, Leqaa has actively participated in several protests in New Jersey and nearby areas, advocating against Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Leqaa has lost approximately 175 family members in Gaza since the genocide began. At the time of her detention, Leqaa was in the process of securing legal residency. During a voluntary meeting with immigration officials at the Newark ICE Field Office, where she was accompanied by her attorney, Leqaa was immediately detained, despite being found to present a low risk to public safety, flight or criminal history. She was transferred to the Prairieland Detention Facility in Texas. This facility is located far from her attorney and family, and it has a documented history of human rights violations. We call on Secretary Noem to take urgent steps to guarantee the human rights of Leqaa Kordiar. We urge you to release her unconditionally. Thank you

Amnesty International - USA: Urgent Actions

  • UPDATE AND NEW ACTION: Sudan is the World's Largest Humanitarian Crisis-You Can Help Stop the Bloodshed. The scale and horror of the atrocities happening right now to civilians in Sudan are beyond difficult to convey. Our Amnesty team has documented unimaginable violence, and in recent days, it has gotten so much worse. The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has become the world's largest humanitarian crisis, with over 12 million displaced and tens of thousands killed. El Fasher, once home to 1.5 million people, is now at the center of a humanitarian emergency. Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have taken control of the city and are actively carrying out house-to-house killings, sexual violence, and other atrocities - including mass execution of civilians based on ethnicity.. In the last week, the RSF expanded their attacks on civilians into other parts of Sudan, besieging cities in North and South Kordofan. We cannot turn our backs on people and families in Sudan. The world is largely ignoring what's happening to them, and we need your help to force our leaders to pay attention and take action.
  • NEW: End Israel's Genocide in Gaza. Despite a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, attacks by Israeli forces continue in the occupied Gaza Strip, Palestinian civilians are still being killed, and families are still facing mass starvation as the engineered famine continues. We urgently need your help to continue pushing for a permanent halt to hostilities, an end to Israel's genocide, and justice. We must raise our voices now to make sure Congress and President Trump know we won't stand by while violations go unchecked.
  • UPDATED: Urge Congress to Stop the Trump Administration Murdering People in Latin America and the Caribbean. The U.S. military's repeated air strikes targeting unidentified boats in Latin America and the Caribbean have as of writing now killed at least 76 people. These strikes are illegal under international human rights law, unconscionable, and dangerous. The use of lethal force in this context has no justification. If the U.S. government can unilaterally decide to bomb anyone it labels a "terrorist" - anywhere, anytime - it sets a chilling global precedent. No government should have the power to kill without accountability.

Amnesty International - USA: Urgent Actions

  • NEW: Release Israeli Conscientious Objector Yuval Peleg: 18-year-old Yuval Peleg is currently serving a 30-day sentence at Neve Tzedek military prison for refusing to enlist in the Israeli military over its involvement in the genocide in Gaza and the unlawful occupation of the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT). Israeli authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Peleg and other conscientious objectors, who are prisoners of conscience.

  • UPDATED: Urge Congress to Stop the Trump Administration Murdering People in Latin America and the Caribbean. The U.S. military's repeated air strikes targeting unidentified boats in Latin America and the Caribbean have as of writing now killed at least 66 people.

  • Stop Escalating Attacks on Civilians in El Fasher, Sudan: Amnesty International is deeply alarmed by reports of escalating violence and attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on civilians in El Fasher, North Darfur. The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has become the world's largest humanitarian crisis, with over 12 million displaced and tens of thousands killed. El Fasher, once home to 1.5 million people, is now at the center of a humanitarian emergency. On 26 October, the RSF claimed that it had taken control of parts of El Fasher, the last major city in Darfur under SAF control. On 27 October, SAF announced it had withdrawn its forces from the city.
    • NEW: Press Release: Sudan: RSF Must End Attacks and Further Suffering of Civilians in El Fasherwww.amnestyusa.org/press-releases/...
    • Why This Matters:
      • El Fasher has endured an 18-month siege by the RSF.
      • Over 260,000 civilians are trapped, including many who were already displaced by earlier conflicts.
      • The RSF has a documented history of war crimes, including ethnically targeted attacks, massacres, and sexual violence.
    • Please CALL your two Senators and your Representative and ASK THEM TO:
      • Demand an immediate end to RSF attacks ON civilians and civilian infrastructure.
      • Use all available tools to push RSF to provide humanitarian access to the city and for to protect civilians in Sudan, including by allowing safe passage for civilians trying to flee the violence.

Amnesty International - USA: Urgent Actions

Urge Congress to Stop the Trump Administration Murdering People at Sea.The U.S. military’s repeated air strikes targeting unidentified boats in the Caribbean Sea have killed at least 32 people. These strikes are illegal under international human rights law, unconscionable, and dangerous. The use of lethal force in this context has no justification. If the U.S. government can unilaterally decide to bomb anyone it labels a “terrorist” — anywhere, anytime — it sets a chilling global precedent. No government should have the power to kill without accountability.

  • URGENT ACTION: Call on Israel to free Palestinian pediatrician Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya.  Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the arbitrarily to detained pediatrician and director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the occupied Gaza Strip, and several other healthcare workers arbitrarily detained by Israel were not among the detainees released recently as part of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas--even though Dr. Hussam’s name was added to the list approved by the Israeli cabinet. Dr. Hussam has been the most prominent voice of Gaza’s decimated healthcare sector.  Now, more than ever, we need to intensify our efforts, amplify our calls, and escalate pressure for his release.
  • URGENT ACTION: Defend the Right to Protest--Call on Secretary Noem to release Leqaa Kordia, a Muslim Palestinian woman and US resident who had been arrested at a protest outside Columbia University against Israel’s genocide in Gaza and is now facing deportation. Leqaa has experienced repeated violations of her religious rights in detention. She has lost approximately 175 family members during Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza. She, just like everyone else, has the human rights to freedom of expression and peaceful protest. Urge Secretary Noem to free Leqaa Kordia!

Rights Denied: Mapping the Suppression of Protesters By Boroumand Center for Human Rights

“Since 1979, Iran has killed men, women and children simply because they took their grievances to the public. Some are well-known, but most are not,” said Roya Boroumand, ABC’s Executive Director. “It is our responsibility to ensure that they are known and remembered.”

On the third anniversary of the Woman, Life, Freedom protest where at least 382 protesters were killed, ABC has launched an interactive map of protest victims, documenting individuals killed for demanding their rights for over four decades. The map exposes the scale and persistence of the state’s deadly response to dissent.

Three years after the nationwide Woman, Life, Freedoms protests, the Iranian authorities’ violent suppression of dissent continues. To mark this anniversary, the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights in Iran (ABC) has launched an interactive map of protest victims, documenting decades of extrajudicial and arbitrary killings and executions of those who took to the streets to demand their rights. ABC has documented at least 1,566 such executions and is launching the map with 720 cases added so far. View the interactive Map:

Peace in Ukraine Reguires Justice

On March 26, Russia and Ukraine reportedly agreed to stop using military force in the Black Sea and to implement a pause on attacks against energy infrastructure. However, the Kremlin has said it will only implement the agreement when sanctions on its banks and exports are lifted. The agreement would be a step on the way to a 30-day full ceasefire. The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has reported that the number of civilian casualties increased by 30 percent in 2024 compared to 2023, at least 12,654 civilians killed and 29,392 injured since February of 2022. Despite the start of peace talks, Friday, March 7, 2025 was one of the deadliest days for civilians this year, with attacks across Ukraine reportedly leaving 21 civilians dead and scores injured.
