In Brazil, Valquiria’s life was in danger. She bravely spoke out against
drug dealers, who said they would kill her and her 7-year-old son Abel –
and would do so ‘without pity’.
She did what any parent would do to keep a child safe, and fled Brazil
seeking protection. But at the US-Mexico border, instead of helping
Valquiria and Abel, US authorities forcibly separated them and then
locked them up.
Valquiria is in despair. When we spoke to her in detention, she told us
that being apart from her son has reduced her will to live.
