Amnesty International: Young Man at Risk of Execution

Amnesty International issued earlier today calling on Iranian authorities to immediately halt all executions of people sentenced to death in relation to nationwide protests and condemning the arbitrary executions of Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Seyed Mohammad Hosseini on 7 January and warning that Mohammad Ghobadlou and others risk the same fate. On 2 January, the Supreme Court upheld the conviction and death sentence of Mohammad Ghobadlou, 22, in connection with the ongoing nationwide protests, making his sentence final and raising fears that his execution is imminent. In the past week, the authorities also announced five further protest-related death sentences imposed by Revolutionary Courts.

Amnesty International - CLOSE GUANTANAMO - Online Action

The military detention facility at Guantánamo Bay is a glaring, longstanding stain on the human rights record of the United States. Today, it continues to hold 35 Muslim men, most without facing charges or a trial. Many, like Toffiq al-Bihani, were tortured by the U.S. government. And Toffiq, along with 19 other detainees, has been cleared for transfer to other countries, yet he remains behind bars without charge or trial.

President Biden has a critical window of opportunity to end these ongoing abuses by closing the detention center before the end of his term.

Help us close Guantánamo and ensure the transfer of all cleared detainees to countries where their human rights will be respected.

Times 2022: Heroes of the Year - Women of Iran

In the winter of 2017, a young woman called Vida Movahed stood on top of a utility box on Revolution Street, a busy artery of central Tehran, and dangled her white headscarf on a stick. As an act of dissent, it was strikingly peaceful, giving the appearance of a white flag of surrender.

These younger women are now in the streets. The movement they’re leading is educated, liberal, secular, raised on higher expectations, and desperate for normality: college and foreign travel, decent jobs, rule of law, access to the Apple Store, a meaningful role in politics, the freedom to say and wear whatever.

Congratulations to the Iranian voices: Woman Life Freedom (Dec. 14, 2022)

Congratulations to the Iranian voices that organized for this unprecedented victory and the advocates and officials who helped make it possible. This is a monumental, tangible achievement to punish the Islamic Republic for its mass abuses of women. It is an important realization of calls that came from inside Iran and, unlike some other forms of pressure, does not hurt ordinary Iranians.
UN MEMBER STATES VOTE YES AND MAKE HISTORY

Today we have made history. The United Nations and its Member States heeded the call of Iranian women to remove the Islamic Republic of Iran from the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women, setting a new precedent in favor of women and girls, not just in Iran, but everywhere. 
Today’s vote marks a pivotal step forward with the U.N. Member States removing a country from the Commission with an appalling record on women’s rights from its membership.

Amnesty International - Iran Team: Nov. 29, 2022

Tack Action on behalf of two Detained Baluchi teenagers who have been tortured. The Iranian authorities are arbitrarily detaining 18-year-old Maziar Shahbakhsh and 17-year-old child Yasin Shahbakhsh, both from Iran’s oppressed Baluchi minority. Since their arrest, when both were children, the authorities have subjected them to torture and other ill-treatment, barred them from accessing their lawyers, and denied or severely limited their access to their families.

BAHRAIN: PRISONER OF CONSCIENCE FACES NEW CHARGES - URGENT ACTION

Dual Danish-Bahraini national and prisoner of conscience Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja is serving a life sentence in prison for leading peaceful protests during the 2011 popular uprising in Bahrain. 

He is now facing a number of separate trials accused of breaking a plastic chair and insulting a police officer. 

All charges against Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja must be dropped as these new cases against him compound his unjust imprisonment for the peaceful exercise of his human rights.

Amnesty International: Iran- UN Human Rights Council Landmark Fact Finding Mission (Nov. 24, 2022)

Responding to today’s announcement that the UN Human Rights Council has passed a landmark resolution to establish a fact-finding mission to investigate human rights violations in Iran related to the protests that began on 16 September 2022, especially with respect to women and children, Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary General, said: “This important and long overdue step shows that the cries of people in Iran for justice have finally been heard. We hope the establishment of this fact-finding mission marks a fundamental shift in the international community’s approach to tackling the crisis of systematic impunity that has long fueled crimes under international law and other serious human rights violations in Iran. The resolution not only enhances international scrutiny of the dire situation in Iran, but also puts in place a process to collect, consolidate and preserve crucial evidence for future prosecutions.
