- We start with the World Day Against the Death Penalty in October. To mark the day we will be holding a webinar on 5 October at 7pm in which we will introduce a new campaign theme – the death penalty as a tool of state oppression.
- For our news articles we start in Egypt where TV presenter Sarah Kalifa has been sentenced to death by hanging along with 11 other defendants in violation once again of international law.
- Then we have yet another awful story from Iran where Taraneh Rahimi has been sentenced to death on charges of ‘Moharebah’ or ‘waging war against God’, primarily arising from her alleged participation in the recent protests there.
- We have two stories from the USA. We start with Francis Clifford Smith who has died in prison aged 101 having served seventy years on death row during which time he was reprieved eight times! We also have the story of Tyler Robinson, charged with the killing of Charlie Kirk. A judge has ruled that prosecutors can seek the death penalty.
- Then back home to Britain where Lee Anderson has once again been advocating for a return to the death penalty.
- We have an urgent action for you to get involved with, this time from Libya where 50 men are in imminent risk of execution following 30 other executions carried out by the LAAF. Do please look at this and take part.
- Our death penalty video is presented by the ACLU and is a really informative look at how the death penalty works in the USA. Finally, our death penalty fact looks at the operation of the death penalty in Japan.
Thank you all so much for your continued support of Amnesty’s campaign against the death penalty.

Last month we let you know that we would be running a webinar to mark the World Day Against the Death Penalty. The webinar will mark the launch our latest campaign highlighting the use of the death penalty as a tool of repression and intimidation.
The webinar will take place on Monday 5 October starting at 7.00pm and will last around one hour. During the webinar we will: |
|

|
| | • explain the purpose of the campaign • hear from Country Coordinators representing China, Iran and Saudi Arabia, countries that are all guilty of this practice • tell you what we plan to do during the campaign including an event to be held in the New Year • explain how you can get involved. This promises to be a really informative and stimulating session from activists who really understand what is happening in these countries. Join us if you can, registeration button is below: |
