SRI LANKA: Four Face Death Penalty - NEWS & URGENT ACTION

Amnesty International, USA, June 26, 2019.

Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena must immediately halt his plans to execute four prisoners, Amnesty International said today.

Amnesty International is shocked by President Sirisena’s announcement that he has signed the execution warrants of four death row prisoners convicted of drug-related crimes, and that they will be hanged in “the near future.”

While the President has confirmed signing the death warrants, no names have been revealed and no details have been shared about any scheduled executions or information on the cases. The lack of transparency makes it impossible to ascertain whether these prisoners have exhausted clemency appeals or if all safeguards were followed in their conviction or sentencing. There is also no confirmation that the four prisoners, or their families, have been alerted to their imminent execution.

Ecuador: Help Indigenous Women Protect Their Land - ONLINE ACTION

Amnesty International, Canada, May 5, 2019

On World Environment Day, we are in solidarity with courageous women earth defenders of Mujeres Amazónicas (Amazonian Women), a collective in the Amazon region of Ecuador.

These determined women risk their lives to protect the world’s largest rainforest from environmental damage caused by extractive industries, like mining, oil drilling and logging.

Patricia Gualinga is a leader of the Kichwa Sarayaku Indigenous community that went all the way to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights to demand that an oil company remove explosives it had placed in Sarayaku territory without their consent.

Patricia was attacked with stones. Her attacker yelled: “Next time, we’ll kill you, bitch!”

Other women defenders of the Amazon have also been attacked and threatened with death in retaliation for outspoken efforts to protect the environment on which the survival of their people depends.
