Please find below a Public Statement
that Amnesty International issued today after two young men convicted of
theft had their fingers amputated in the Central Prison of Mashhad, north-eastern
Khorasan Province, on Sunday 28 June. The amputation exposes the outrageous
inhumanity of a criminal justice system that is bent on enforcing cruelty.
Instead of legalizing brutality, the Iranian authorities must immediately
abolish all forms of corporal punishment and take urgent steps to bring
the country’s criminal justice system into conformity with international
human rights laws and standards.
