AI Madison Group #139 Weekly Update - March 13, 2015

"Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds," to Everyone!
This is the SEVENTH year that Amnesty International USA has done a Nowruz action to bring comfort to Iranians in prison and their families. Please send cards to the prisoners and their families. You will be making a huge difference. At a minimum you will remind them that they have not been forgotten. When the authorities see the volume of mail they receive, they may be persuaded to release them or at least improve their conditions of confinement. Names, pictures, his or her personal story, and addresses can be found here. This year Amnesty International is asking people to, if they like, take pictures of their Nowruz cards--and of themselves holding their Nowruz cards--before putting them in the mail and send them to (aiis@uchicago.edu) or jheiss@aiusa.org and also to post pictures of your Nowruz cards on your personal Facebook page or on our AI Madison Group #139 Facebook Page. We'll add them to our photo page on our website. Please send your cards today.
     Happy Spring!

Special Note: Madison has made the national news this week for the tragic death of Tony Robinson, a nineteen year old biracial man, who was shot by a Madison police officer last Friday. Demonstrations and rallies have been held all week. His mother, Andrea Irwin, said, "My son was never a violent man, and I don't want to see violence in his name." His funeral is this Saturday at East High School. As we grieve with Tony's family and friends, we also wait for the results from the outside investigation for this officer-involved shooting.
