After months of debate, the WA Government passed a bill to extend mandatory sentencing for 16 and 17-year-olds. It feels like a kick in the guts when Labor’s policies oppose mandatory sentencing, but then they help pass a bill to expand it. This harmful law will land more Indigenous kids in prison.
Together we shouted at the top of our lungs that prison must be a last resort for young people. While the outcome isn’t what we want, we did make an impact. Thanks to your pressure, there was far more debate and consideration of the impact on Indigenous kids. Your signatures were raised in Parliament and various MPs raised your concerns. Thank you for putting up a good fight.
We must continue to shine a light on these destructive laws until they are abolished.
