"Heartbreaking images of the body of little Aylan Kurdi, washed ashore on a beach in Turkey this week, have shocked all Australians.
These images put a face and a name to the brutal, ongoing conflict in Syria that has already killed 220,000 people, displaced 7.6 million, and forced more than 4 million to flee.
Australia, one of the world’s wealthiest countries, has a responsibility to welcome our fair share of families like Aylan’s, searching for a place to be safe.
Tony Abbott has already said that Australia is in a position to increase its humanitarian intake. This increase must be meaningful and immediate.
Amnesty is calling on Australia to urgently resettle 20,000 Syrian refugees considered most in need by the UNHCR. This must be in addition to Australia’s current humanitarian quota of 13,750 a year."
