"Shahrul Izani was 19 when he was charged with possession of cannabis. This was his first offence. After spending more that six years in detention awaiting trial, Shahrul was convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to death.
Shahrul has appealed for clemency before the Pardon Board of Selangor state and has stated that he has fully repented for his crime and would not reoffend again if given the chance. His appeal is still pending.
Under Malaysian Law, people found in possession of a certain amounts of illegal substances are automatically presumed to be trafficking drugs and sentenced to mandatory death penalty."
