Irom Sharmila has been on hunger strike for 14 years and each year she campaigns for justice.
She started peacefully protesting when she heard of the killings of 10 innocent civilians at a bus stop, in 2000 - allegedly by an Indian paramilitary group. Sharmila is persecuted for protesting what has become known as the Malom Massacre. All she wants is justice for the victims of this horrific event.
However, even after all these years, no one has been brought to justice for those killings! Armed forces continue to operate with impunity under the Armed Forces Act. This Act allows soldiers and security personnel alike to shoot and kill unsuspecting civilians in certain situations.
Irom’s appeal is simple: repeal the Act.
