When
Liu was 45 years old, she was forced to retire from her work at the
state-owned Xinyu Iron and Steel Plant in China. Angered and mobilized,
she became an activist —first for workers' rights, then for anti-corruption efforts. As a result, Liu has been intimidated. She's been beaten. She's been illegally detained. Now,
she's been sentenced to more than six years in prison for calling on
the Chinese government to step up the fight against corruption. She's
stated that she was tortured during her pre-trial detention, and she
continues to be at-risk. Liu
is one of many people who have been persecuted and detained for their
links to the New Citizens' Movement, which is a network of activists
aiming to promote government transparency and expose corruption in
China. Click here to demand Liu Pings release.
"I am innocent; every step that I have taken, it
has all been in the legitimate pursuit of equality, freedom, and
democracy. I have put into action all that I believe in. History will
declare my innocence." - Liu Ping
