Phyoe Phyoe Aung, an important figure in Myanmar’s leading student
union, helped organise a peaceful march against a new law which the
students believe limits academic freedom. Shockingly, protesters were beaten by police and charged with dubious
criminal offences. Phyoe Phyoe Aung is now in prison and could face a
nine year sentence. Across the country, young people and student leaders continue to be
harassed by authorities due to a clampdown on the student movement.
"My
message for you and Amnesty supporters is to please say loudly to
President Thein Sein and his government: Prison is not the answer for
people who want change.”
