Greetings Everyone!
This week I
followed many of the top news stories from abroad: the passing of Muhammad Ali,
boxer and human rights activist; the light sentence given to a star athlete for
rape; and the deaths of over 1,000 migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea. I
didn't hear much about the good news surrounding the United Nations ruling
regarding Ireland's abortion ban or the release of Father Nguyen Van Ly. I also
did not see the world reacting to the horrible attacks on civilians in Tel
Aviv. This story I heard from my family. Amnesty International Israel condemned
the attacks and implored the government to restrain its retribution. I didn't
see social media light up with "Je suis Tel Aviv." Why? Freedom
fighter? Terrorist? We need to separate the politics from human rights. Four
innocent people were killed in a shopping center. Children in Israel practice
bombing drills like we practice tornado drills in the Midwest. We must work
harder for peace. Muhammad Ali said, “Hating people because of their color is
wrong. And it doesn't matter which color does the hating. It's just plain
wrong.” Does this not also apply to religion and political borders?
Just my two
cents,
