Today is the Day of the African Child, established to
celebrate children in Africa and inspire action towards addressing the
challenges they face, including the right to remain a child, not a bride.
Niger – gripped by a serious food and water crisis,
exacerbated by high population growth – is one of the poorest countries
in the world. This crisis has allowed forced marriage to proliferate.
Three-quarters of girls in Niger are married before they are adults. Child marriage often amounts to slavery: when girls have not given
their free and full consent, are subjected to control, are exploited and
unable to leave.
