World Refugee Day: Updates & Resources - ACTION ITEMS June 20, 2016

Amnesty International USA

First, as you know, we are gearing up to expand our work on refugees and migrants. This is a global campaign priority for Amnesty International, and AIUSA embraced it as one of our priority campaigns in the four-year Strategic Plan that was adopted this spring. The global campaign will launch in mid-September, connected to a United Nations summit on refugees, and we will be providing you with extensive material leading up to that.
In the meantime, our focus related to refugees and migrants is:
  • To create empathy among the public for refugees and migrants, so that people are less prone to go along with fear-based policies
  • To expand public and policymaker understanding of the refugee and migrant crisis, by beginning to educate people about the dimensions of the issue that exist in the Americas (with migrants from Central America fleeing difficult circumstances and facing horrific treatment during their journey and once they arrive in Mexico and the U.S.)
  • To spur action by the Obama Administration and Congress on several fronts, including how refugees’ and migrants’ human rights are protected, how they are processed at U.S. borders, how many refugees the U.S. accepts, and how much assistance the U.S. provides to other countries to accept more refugees
Action Items include:

  • Article, "Lives On Hold and In Danger," by Margaret Huang
  • Materials on World Refugee Day that we’ve produced, which you can post and circulate locally, as well. Please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have questions or suggestions.
