Remind me again, what’s a justice target?
A justice target is a goal to close the gap of over-representation of Indigenous people in the justice system. This target would sit inside the Closing the Gap framework which governments have created with the aim to reduce Indigenous disadvantage on health, education and employment. This is about making sure Indigenous people have the same quality of life as everyone else. Justice targets would mean government recognises publicly that there is a problem, it would help us hold our government to account, and mean we can track progress. It will help us put pressure on governments to invest in kids and their communities so they don’t get into trouble in the first place rather than prisons and courts after they commit a crime.
