Narges Mohammadi
When: Thursday, April 21st, 2016, from 5:30 to 7 pm
Where: NW corner of the Federal Building in Westwood
(1100 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90024)
Sponsored by: Amnesty International, Group 22, Pasadena
Narges
Mohammadi is an advocate for women and children’s rights in Iran. She
is currently a prisoner of conscience, imprisoned solely for the
peaceful exercise of her rights to freedom of expression, association
and non-violent assembly. She has been in prison since May 2015.
The
Iranian government has charged her with "spreading propaganda against
the system" and "assembly and collusion against national security." This
is because she founded the group, Step by Step to Stop Death Penalty,
and gave interviews to the media about her opposition to child death
penalty. She has also been condemned for close connections with Nobel
Peace Prize laureate, Shirin Ebadi, and for meeting Catherine Ashton,
then EU Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
This
rally is part of an international collaboration with local and
International Amnesty Groups in Belgium, Germany, Denmark and the US, to
bring justice to Narges Mohammadi.
Anyone can participate by using this action’s hashtag: #UnitedforNarges.
On April 21st, which is her birthday, all vigils and rallies around the
world will be connected with this twitter tag. If you cannot join the
rally, light a candle for Narges Mohammadi, take a picture of it, and
tweet with #UnitedforNarges, to shine a light on human rights abuses,
and as a sign of hope.
