On May 2016, President Obama
will travel to Japan for the G7 Summit. Please take a moment to encourage
President Obama to visit Hiroshima and/or Nagasaki while he is there. By
visiting the cities against which the U.S. used atomic bombs in 1945, President
Obama would become the first sitting U.S. President to do so. It could set a
positive tone for the remainder of President Obama's term and help awaken the
people of the world to the continuing threats posed by today's nuclear
arsenals.
Here is a sample letter written by Dr. Farideh
Kioumehr Dadsetan, one of our Amnesty International Madison Group #139 members.
Dear President, as the first recipient
of the "Peace Award" from American Public Health Association, a
health professional, an epidemiologist, a mother, and citizen of this great
nation, I am writing to encourage you to visit Hiroshima and/or Nagasaki in May
when you are in Japan for the G7 Summit. I did visit Hiroshima, with my son few
years ago. It was such an eye opener visit. By visiting these cities, you could
draw the world’s attention to the ongoing threats to all humanity posed by
nuclear weapons, as you did so effectively in your speech in Prague in 2009.
You could also acknowledge the atomic bomb survivors (hibakusha) who have
worked so diligently for a nuclear weapon free world. Do the right thing, and
be the first sitting US president in the History book for this historic travel
and your peaceful actions.
My very best
Dr. Farideh Kioumehr Dadsetan
