First we would like to acknowledge the passing of Prince who was an
inspiration to many and supported human rights through his music and
personally, but quietly, financed many human rights efforts. His music,
his lyrics, his spirit will live on for future generations of human
rights activists.
Today, we are also celebrating International Mother Earth Day 2016 with
the signing of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Secretary-General
Ban Ki-moon said, "On this day, representatives of more than 170 countries are gathering
at UN Headquarters in New York to sign the Paris Agreement on Climate
Change. This landmark pact, in conjunction with the 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development, holds the power to transform our world." Our
weekly Members Links & Petitions post often contains links to
environmental issues. Help us celebrate Earth Day by taking action
today.
We have received the updated flyer for
Jeff Halper's University of Wisconsin Madison Distinguished Lecture on
May 4th. He will be speaking about the current situation in Israel and
Palestine. If you are in Madison, please join us.
Also, thank you to Angie Hougas and Dr.
Azam Niroomand-Rad for sending us photos from the Amnesty International
Annual General Meeting and the UW Women's Summit respectively. They can
be found here on our website.
Happy Mother Earth Day,
-Debbie, Weekly Update Editor
