Since 2015 at least 91 people have faced intimidation, harassment and detention under the arbitrary laws. Among these people are Khalid Ismath and N. Surendran. Khalid is a student activist that was charged for comments he made on Facebook about abuse of power that allegedly offended the Royal family. Similarly, Surendran, a prominent lawyer, was charged for criticising a court’s ruling by calling the decision “flawed, defensive and insupportable”. Not only are their charges a blatant attack on freedom of expression, but they instill fear in those willing to speak up.
