Edgewood College, Madison, WI: Working for Justice and Peace in Colombia: Saving the Amazon - June 3 & 4, 2016 LECTURE

Edgewood College
Since 2010 the indigenous Kamentsa and Inga populations in Colombia have had many concerns. The construction of a road, which has the potential to cause irreversible damage to the Amazon Rainforest, has caused aggression against and the violation of human rights of the indigenous people. In 2010 Carmenza Tez Juagibioy began to dedicate her time to defending the territorial and collective rights of these indigenous communities. In 2011, she was elected by a democratic vote of the Kamentsa as a member of their governing body. The same year she was also appointed by both the Inga and Kamentsa as their delegate for presenting their official complaint of their vulnerability in this situation. Carmenza has engaged in these activities with the firm belief that social processes are born from the effort and sacrifice of the people. Consequently, her efforts are supported by the goodwill and generosity of people who dream that someday their collective and human rights will become a reality.
