Denied the right to exist. The Rohingya minority have endured decades of abuse in Myanmar, under a government that doesn’t recognise them. Without citizenship or hope, thousands of Rohingya flee to neighbouring Asian countries by boat, leaving them vulnerable not only to danger at sea, but ruthless abuse by traffickers. Earlier this year, thousands of Rohingya refugees were left stranded off the coast of Asia. Governments in our region failed to act in time and even pushed them out to die at sea. We urgently called on our supporters to insist our neighbours rescue these people. The Indonesian and Malaysian governments heard our calls and allowed some boats to land safely. However more lives could have been saved if leaders were faster. As sailing conditions improve, the wave of boats are likely to start again. Traffickers are preparing to send more refugees out on this perilous journey.
