Lawyer and human rights defender, Waleed Abu al-Khair is serving a 15 year prison sentence handed down by a Saudi Arabian court for his peaceful activism.Waleed has faced ongoing harassment and threats for challenging government policy and defending peaceful activists, including his brother-in-law and prominent blogger, Raif Badawi. Since 2012 Saudi Arabian authorities have cracked down on policy critics. Waleed was found guilty of harming the reputation of the Kingdom, insulting the judiciary and other farcical charges under a new dubious counter-terrorism law. While in prison, Waleed was beaten and kept in solitary confinement. He suffers from diabetes and hasn’t been able to see his wife and daughter regularly.
