United Nations Human Rights: Don't Shoot the Messenger

United Nations Human Rights

"Globally, one journalist is killed every 5 days, with the vast majority of cases never properly investigated or resolved. In the past year, the UN human rights system, supported by my Office, has raised issues related to the safety of journalists in a total of about 70 different countries, across all regions of the world. Respect for journalists' human rights cannot be taken for granted anywhere and is an ongoing concern. The ability of journalists to do their work and keep society informed should not be unduly restricted. Every silenced journalist makes us all less informed, and less free.

Unfortunately, more often than not, impunity is a choice. To combat impunity we know what works: creation of special investigative units, specialized training and methodological tools for law enforcement and judicial officers, and closer cooperation with regional accountability mechanisms, for instance. All it requires is political will. There are no excuses."
